Warning to candidates: smarten the debates

Former Vice President Dick Cheney recently appeared on “The View,” ABC’s morning talk show. Responding to a question from co-host Elisabeth Hasselback about the recent GOP presidential debates, Cheney called the “debate process very healthy.”
Jim Lehrer, longtime anchor of NewsHour on PBS, pointed out that, theoretically at least, the debate process is useful, but seldom in ways the candidates might hope. Wavering or undecided voters watch the confrontations among presidential hopefuls looking for a reason to vote for one of them, Lehrer said. They’re asking themselves, “Can I imagine this person as my president?”

The power of small things

Small doesn’t mean unimportant. Theology, science, sports and commerce elaborate on this truism. The Bible says a lot about the power of small things. The Book of Matthew (Matthew 25:21) for instance, reports a servant rewarded for his faithfulness to completing every humble task.
“Well done, good and true servant,” his master told him. “You have been true in small things, I will give you control over great things.”
Without cells -- the smallest unit of an organism – nothing would be alive. Everything living, animal and plant, is made up of cells. We humans are composed of about 100 trillion cells of various types. Together, they form tissues, which coalesce to form organs that work together to produce systems, which make up our bodies.

Una joven pareja con una niña pequeña y yo recientemente nos cruzamos en el supermercado. La madre y la niña tenían ojos negros radiantes con abundantes pestañas. Su brillante cabello oscuro enmarcaba las bonitas caras, y el cabello rizado de la niña se movía mientras caminaba. Los padres y la niña tenían complexión morena y características encantadoras.

Hispanic obesity: we’re the culprits

A young couple with a little girl and I recently crossed paths at the grocery store. Mother and daughter had black, thickly lashed luminous eyes. Their shimmering, dark hair framed pretty faces, and the toddler’s thick curls bounced as she bobbed along. Parents and child all had lustrous, café-au lait complexions and alluring features.
What captured my attention, however, was the grotesquely immense girth of the young Latina and her husband. It was painful to see. Both were morbidly obese. The inescapable thoughts that struck me watching them – and have haunted me ever since – is that neither may live long enough to see their little girl grow up. And she’s likely to suffer the same consequences of poor eating habits. Their grocery cart was brimful of processed, high-calorie food with nominal nutritional value.

Remembering 9/11

On Oct. 1, 1910, the first terrorist attack on U.S. soil occurred, when two labor union organizers blew up the Los Angeles Times building in California. The blast and resulting fire killed 21 people and injured 100.
During a bustling lunch hour on Sept. 16, 1920, terrorists struck again. A bomb exploded on Wall Street in New York City. The perpetrators remain a mystery, but authorities suspected Italian anarchists. The explosion caused 38 deaths and injured 143 unfortunate souls.

Immigration policy shift is reassuring

One morning in July 2008, Alice Swanson was bicycling to her new job at a non-profit research center in Washington, D.C., when a garbage truck fatally struck her. The 24-year-old, fluent in Spanish and Arabic, had just completed an internship at an international studies institute.
The truck driver was an illegal immigrant with a history of felony convictions in the United States and multiple illegal re-entries. He had operated the truck with a fraudulent driver’s license.
